Learn more about chiropractic’s effective treatment of headaches, and find out if chiropractic care might be right for you

When most individuals think of chiropractic treatment, they think of back pain relief. What may not stand out to those suffering from constant headaches is that chiropractic can effectively treat their pain. To understand how chiropractic can relieve one’s head pain, one must first understand why headaches occur.

Why Headaches occur and how to Treat Them

A woman receives an treatment from a Chiropractor.

More often than not, headaches or due to an irregularity in the spine. More importantly, migraines occur when the vertebrae in the spine are not aligned. This is also known as a subluxation, which in turn, can cause a compression or irritation of nerves that travel from the spine to the brain. The result is from a subluxation is a chemical imbalance within the brain, ultimately leading to an individual suffering from a migraine.

How do chiropractors treat such pain with chiropractic care? They begin by careful, minor adjustments to the spine. Ultimately, their goal is to realize the spine to it’s normal position. By accomplishing this goal, chiropractic relieves pressure on the inflamed nerves cause by subluxation. This in turn allows the nerves to heal.

Migraines are not the only form of headaches caused by a misalignment of the spine. Cervicogenic headaches may also be caused by a disorder in the neck. A disorder in the neck may be caused by an injury to the neck. In addition, muscle tension and spasms in the neck are known to cause tension headaches. With chiropractic care, chiropractors are able to gently and effectively realign the neck area of the spine.

The Results

A man receives treatment from a Chiropractor.

Conclusively, chiropractic care can effectively address the root cause of pain associated with headaches. Rather than addressing the symptoms, chiropractic works to correct what may be causing migraines, or other forms of headaches, in the first place. It should be noted that chiropractic may not treat every headache. However, a study published in the Journal of Headache and Pain demonstrated chiropractic’s safe and effective treatment. It was noted that of the 218 participants suffering from migraines, 36% saw a reduction in frequency, intensity, and duration.

Learn more about how chiropractors are successfully treating the symptoms of acute back pain, while saving patients both time and money

The American Chiropractic Association (ACA) recently released statistics on acute back pain. Their information noted that 80 percent of the population suffers from back-related issues at some point in their lives. Furthermore, their study reports that 31 million citizens living in the United States deal with daily chronic back pain. With such staggering numbers, one begs the question, “What can be done to help reduce the number of people suffering from a back-related issue?”

What can be done to treat Acute Back Pain?

An photo of an x-ray of a human spine.

A new study suggests chiropractic care treats acute back pain.

When reading similar reports, patients may feel as though back pain is inescapable, making the search for preventative treatment pointless. Fortunately, one recent study from the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) seems to suggest otherwise. Their study suggests that as long as a treatment plan includes chiropractic care, acute back pain can be prevented.

The Journal of the American Medical Association published a comprehensive review and analysis conducted by 10 medical professionals from universities, medical centers, and healthcare systems across the United States. The primary inquiry this group set out to answer was, “Is the use of Spinal Manipulative Therapy (SMT) in the management of acute (≤6 weeks) low back pain associated with improvements in pain or function?” The medical group investigated 26 different clinical trials, with a timespan from January 2011 to February 2017. These clinical trials involved Spinal Manipulative Therapy for 1,711 different patients.

Results of the Study

A photo of a doctor holding a patient's x-ray.

Chiropractic care can save families both time and money when treating acute back pain.

The medical group noticed that in 15 of these studies, Spinal Manipulation Therapy statistically significantly benefited the patients. It was also effective in lowing their levels of back pain. Additionally, almost half of those 26 different trials (12 in all) discovered positive effects in functionality for 1,381 patients. This is when compared to alternative treatment methods or incorrect chiropractic care.

Studies do note that 50 to 67 percent of participants experienced muscle stiffness, headaches, or increased pain after SMT. However, no serious adverse events occurred as a result. This only solidifies the safety of chiropractic care, while also confirming it as a legitimate option for the treatment of acute back pain.

This study is important, as a recent statistic from the ACA states that 50 percent of the working population experienced back pain in the previous 12 months. This only serves to confirm that one effective way of treating these symptoms and keeping families on their feet is through a process that treats their back pain effectively. Consistent Chiropractic care can do just that for a patient. Chiropractic care can save families both time and money due to the avoidance of unnecessary medical bills. This may also allow families to enjoy doing the things they love together.

Learn more about one study that researched and discovered cost-effective treatment options for seniors living with chronic neck pain

While the vast majority long to be financially secure in their later years, unfortunately, this doesn’t seem to be the current trend. In fact, the National Council on Aging reports that more than 25 million of our country’s 60+ year old’s are considered “financially unstable.” Furthermore, they’re report that most live at or below the federal poverty level, which is just shy of $30k a year. Financial insecurity often implies deciding which bills get paid in the first, which bills remain unpaid, and what items or services they can do without. These services can often include treatment options relating to one’s overall health. With many seniors suffering from chronic neck pain, in addition to other ailments, researchers have set out to discover cost-effective cures for patients seeking affordable health care.

Financial Security and your Health

One study has unveiled that chiropractic can be an alternatively cost-effective treatment for seniors struggling with common chronic neck pain.

Occasionally, taking care of their own wellbeing doesn’t always make the cut. However, one study has unveiled that chiropractic can be an alternatively cost-effective treatment for seniors struggling with common chronic neck pain. The study was supported by the National Institute of Health and Health Resources and Services Administration and, in it, researchers set out to conclude the cost-effectiveness of three distinctive treatment choices: Home Exercise and Advice (HEA), HEA joined with Spinal Manipulative Treatment (SMT), and HEA accompanied with Supervised Rehabilitative Exercise (SRE).

Cost-Effective Treatment Options

A woman receives a neck adjustment from her chiropractor.

SMT and HEA together “resulted in the greatest reduction of neck pain and disability, and the most gains in QALYs.”

Results were distributed in the November 2016 version of The Spine Journal and, among those examined were 241 people. Their ages ranged from 65 or older and they were located in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The participants suffered from chronic mechanical neck pain, and to be eligible, had to rate their pain a “3” on a 0-10 torment scale for three months or more. Additionally, the pain had to be joined by firmness or delicacy in the cervical spine.

When participants were chosen, they were relegated to one of the three treatment groups for a total of 12 weeks. The HEA-only group received 4 one-hour sessions in which they were told which activities would cause and how to them self-heal their pain. The HEA + SMT group received the same treatment, in addition to up to 20 sessions with a chiropractor. The HEA + SRE group also received four direction sessions, coupled with 20 one-hour sessions, improving upon exercises thanks to the advice from an exercise therapist.

The expenses of the treatments and their viability were monitored for one year, with data being calculated at the one, three, and six-month periods, in addition to the end of the study. According to the results, researchers determined that SMT and HEA together “resulted in the greatest reduction of neck pain and disability, and the most gains in QALYs” (quality-adjusted life years). Moreover, this joined treatment method was five percent less costly than HEA alone and 47 percent lower than SRE and HEA combined when considering both immediate and indirect expenses. In conclusion, chiropractic can be a part of a cost-effective, yet effective treatment plan for seniors who fall at or below the federal poverty level.

Read about one study that linked chiropractic care to the relief of tension headaches after one month of spinal manipulation

With tension headaches being a common nervous system disorder around the world, plaguing nearly 50 percent of the populace at least once annually, figuring out how to relieve them is critical with regards to improving quality of relief for many. There are different kinds of headaches– for example, migraines and cluster headaches – and each headache involves different styles of treatment. However, the point still stands that the most common form of headache plaguing the world populace is a tension headache. Fortunately, a new study has shown that chiropractic care may effectively relieve the most common form of a headache after a month of regular treatment.

About Tension Headaches

A woman grabs at the front of her head to relieve pain brought on by headaches.

Tension headaches plague anywhere from 30 to 80 percent of sufferers.

As indicated by the Cleveland Clinic, tension headaches plague anywhere from 30 to 80 percent of sufferers and are identified by by the pain that extends over the head in a sort of band. This sets tension headaches apart from migraines, as the pain from those are generally felt on one side of the head. Since tension headaches are so predominant, researchers have begun multiple studies in order to determine which treatments offer relief. One such bit of research was distributed in the European Journal of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine in February of 2016. It was intended to decide if there were any head pain benefits offered by chiropractic care.

Study and Conclusion

A woman holding the front of her head in hopes of relieving one of many headaches.

If you experience the ill effects of tension headaches, chiropractic care may relieve your symptoms naturally.

Sixty-two women between the ages of 18 and 65 joined. All of them endured a tension-type headache. Upon approval, each were appointed to one of four groups, three of which included a particular treatment (one was spinal manipulation) and one of which acted as a control. Following the study, researchers found that when compared with the control, the individuals who received spinal manipulation “showed improvements in their physical role, bodily pain, and social functioning” one month after treatment. In summary, chiropractic care enhanced their quality of life beyond the physical improvements of headache relief. In the event that you experience the ill effects of a tension headache, chiropractic care may relieve your symptoms naturally. Additionally, it may also provide a healthier standard of living.

Learn about one study that links shoe orthotics to the ease and relief of Chronic Lower back pain caused by wearing painful shoes

When one’s body aches, it’s only natural that one searches for different methods of treatment that address the area of the body in pain. If your back is sore, it would be pointless to apply heat to your calf muscle. Additionally, in the event that your neck began to stiffen, you wouldn’t attempt to find help by stretching your toes.

With that said, our body parts do not entirely function independently from one another. There are a few occurrences when treatment applied to one area of the body does provide relief to another. One example brought to light is how shoe orthotics can help relieve chronic back pain.

Breaking down the 3 Research Groups

A man finishing tying his dress shoes.

You may find relief from back pain simply by wearing the appropriate inserts with uncomfortable shoes.

A 2017 study published in the Archives of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation included 225 adult subjects who had been encountering asymptomatic low back pain for approximately three months. Every member was allocated to one of three research groups. Members of the first group were provided custom-fit shoe orthotics to wear for a period of six weeks. The second group was provided with spinal manipulation. This included thoracic and sacroiliac high-velocity as well as low-amplitude manipulation. They were also given a soft-tissue back rub, and ice or heat packs. That is in addition to custom orthotics for the same period of time as the first group. Finally, the third group were the control, taking part in no treatment.

Discoveries from the Research Groups

A woman poses in worn out running shoes.

Those wearing custom-fit inserts experienced a significant reduction in back pain, compared to those without inserts.

Each member of the three research groups were assessed upon conclusion of the study. While each group revealed improvements in their level of back pain, the two groups wearing shoe orthotics experienced “significantly greater” reductions of chronic back pain. Furthermore, the group provided with chiropractic care in addition to utilizing custom shoe orthotics demonstrated the most reduction in pain.

In a Q&A distributed on Podiatry Today, medical experts speculated that shoe orthotics may provide help by revising walking issues, therefore removing the abnormal movements that contribute to chronic back pain. Another issue shoe orthotics help address are movements that contribute to asymmetries in the body, reestablishing the symmetry which naturally relieves pain.

While Pharmacy Orthotics are fine, Custom Orthotics are Best

A pair of grey shoes poses for a product image.

The APMA suggests purchasing orthotics that provide the correct support according to your level of activity.

While custom orthotics prove to provide the best results, many patients buy orthotics from a retail location or pharmacy store. In these occurrences, the American Podiatric Medical Association (APMA) recommend that individuals take their shoes with them to guarantee the inserts will fit. Furthermore, they encourage you try them on in the store before purchasing them. Additionally, the APMA suggests purchasing orthotics that provide the correct support according to your level of activity. Also, note that if you suffer from a disease such as diabetes, choosing the wrong insert may cause symptoms related to the disease to worsen. Therefore, one should speak with a podiatrist to find out which insures work best for them.

Learn more about how Chiropractic Care has been studied and proven to be safer and more effective for Seniors, when compared to traditional medical care.

Many researchers have determined that chiropractic care can safely and effectively treat various spine-related issues. The American Chiropractic Association has listed multiple studies on their website that demonstrate the importance and effectiveness of chiropractic when relieving (and at times resolving) back and neck pain, headaches, and more.

Determining Safety and Effectiveness for Seniors

Two individuals are seen holding hands and walking through a busy street during the day.

“Researchers set out to determine whether chiropractic was as safe and effective for senior patients as it is for more younger patients encountering these kinds of issues.”

While this is beneficial news for experts practicing spinal manipulation, researchers set out to determine whether chiropractic was as safe and effective for senior patients as it is for more younger patients encountering these kinds of issues. They set out to in search of their answer, which was determined by means of a retrospective cohort study funded by NIH and the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine, which was consequently reported on in Spine upon its conclusion.

Researchers needed to determine whether the connection between the potential risk of injury to individuals 66 years of age and older while receiving chiropractic care was higher than, lower than, or equivalent to the risk of injury to this same age group after experiencing medical care from their primary doctor. To discover their answer, they examined information on Medicare B patients who visited their primary doctor in 2007 for a neuromusculoskeletal issue, assessing their risk of injury seven days after treatment.

Study’s Conclusion

3 individuals are seen riding their bikes near a pond, with a dog in a basket on the back of one of the bikes.

“Seniors receiving chiropractic care had a 76% reduced rate of injury inside seven days of treatment.”

Researchers found that seniors receiving chiropractic care had a 76% reduced rate of injury inside seven days of treatment when compared with subjects that met with their primary doctor because of a neuromusculoskeletal issue. Additionally, researchers called attention to males in the study that were considered seniors, and those with a higher Charlson co-morbidity score were at a higher risk of damage inside a week after being diagnosed with a neuromusculoskeletal issue.

Furthermore, certain medical conditions increased the risk of injury, even after chiropractic care. Due to this, professionals are advised to consider whether treatment by means of spinal manipulation is best for “patients with coagulation defects, inflammatory spondylopathy, osteoporosis, aortic aneurysm & dissection, or [those who have engaged in] long term use of anticoagulant therapy” as increased risk of injury may not be justified, regardless of the potential advantages.

Discover how Chiropractic care has shown to help reduce the symptoms of Asthma and COPD, as well as to improve Respiratory function

The World Health Organization reports that the most widely recognized chronic respiratory diseases are asthma, pulmonary hypertension, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Others include hypertension in the arteries that connect the heart and lungs. Despite these conditions having the possibility to pass through hereditary qualities, how you live your life can also affect these diseases. Dangers may arise from with exposure to second-hand smoke, abnormal amounts of air contamination, and chemicals found in different work or home environments. Clearly, genes are genes, and removing these harmful toxins can help you avoid the development of long-based diseases.

Chiropractic Methods and Effectiveness

A woman inhales with flowers in the background.

“The most widely recognized chronic respiratory diseases are asthma, pulmonary hypertension, and COPD.”

One investigation has found that another way to keep your lungs breathing easier is with regular chiropractic visits. In September of 2016, the Journal of Physical Therapy Science released an investigation including 30 subjects between the ages of 20 and 38 who were not presently being treated for respiratory diseases, nor were they encountering any pain in their thoracic region. Half were randomly alloted to an experimental group, which is the group that received spinal-manipulation therapy. The second group was allocated to the control, getting fake treatment.

At the beginning of the investigation, each subject’s respiratory function was tested and recorded. Roughly ten minutes after, contingent upon which group the individual was in, they received high-velocity, low-amplitude control adjustments to the thoracic region of the spine or sham chiropractic. Respiratory testing took place promptly following the real or sham chiropractic session. After studying the information gathered, researchers noticed that the group receiving real chiropractic care had “significantly increased” their forced vital capacity and forced expiratory volume in one second. The gathering that received fake chiropractic care showed no difference in their respiratory function.

What was Discovered

Silhouette of a woman running with a sunset in the background.

Participating in exercise can promote a better respiratory function.

These discoveries propose that chiropractic care has a more critical role in healthy respiratory function than many people figure. This data may prove useful to patients who have encountered chronic respiratory issues and are searching for relief. However, it may work to diminish the probability of lung-related diseases in any situation.

As the COPD Foundation explains, “once lung function is gone, it is gone for good.” This is the reason they suggest taking part in exercises which can promote a higher lung capacity. This includes: participating in exercises, performing physically demanding exercises during times when breathing is easier, and staying inside when extreme temperatures are expected or pollution is high.

Discover how Holistic Chiropractic Care works to improve your overall health through back, neck and joint pain treatments.

Back and neck pain are the main areas for which patients look for chiropractic help. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractic care serves as a holistic therapy that concentrates on fortifying up solid musculoskeletal and nervous systems to promote general wellness. To learn more about how chiropractors effectively relieve symptoms as they relate to back, neck, and joint pain, we will dive deeper into what it takes to make Holistic Chiropractic Care work.

Effectiveness of these Treatments

An image of a human spine model.

Research on Holistic Chiropractic Care demonstrates that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, alongside exercise, alleviate neck pain more successfully than prescription drugs.

New research on holistic chiropractic care is surging. As per the Annals of Internal Medicine, recent tests demonstrate that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, alongside exercise, alleviate neck pain more successfully than prescription drugs. Additionally, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics detailed that an incorporated approach to health care – including holistic chiropractic care – brings about a 51.8 percent reductions in pharmaceutical expenses and 43 percent less hospital admissions. Consider seeing a chiropractor, should you encounter persistent pain in your back, neck or joints, in addition to migraines. This is particularly so if frequent soreness follows accidents, chores or prolonged periods of poor posture.

Treating Back, Neck and Joint Pain

The joints in a foot are massaged by a holistic chiropractor to allow nerves to work at their optimum ability.

“Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability, allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability.”

Chiropractors are best known for securely and effectively treating intense back and neck pain, as well as persistent headaches. While a medical doctor may recommend pain medicine, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory drugs, and an orthopedic specialist may propose surgery, a chiropractor will treat your chiropractic issues by hand, through control of the spine.

Nancy Elwartowski-Cooper, a pediatric and prenatal chiropractor, sees more and more referrals from medical doctors: “They (patients) are tired of the drugs and want answers to what is causing their problems.”

Chiropractors bring the musculoskeletal structure to the correct alignment. Chiropractors change the position of your body and apply pressure to specific positions along the spine that are not adequately adjusted. This creates a popping sound, similar to the one made when you crack your knuckles. The noise is made by an adjustment of pressure in your joints as gas bubbles are released. By altering the spine with their hands at specific pressure points, chiropractors release nerve energy and enable it to drift down your spine and all throughout your entire body. Frequent visits can, after some time, realign your spine to better promote general wellbeing.

Chiropractor Brian Elwartowski said the mind sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to your entire body. In the event that specific nerves are squeezed by a twist in the spine, they won’t function as though they were straight. “Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability,” he states, “allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability.”

Choosing a Treatment Plan that is right for you

A woman has her neck adjusted by a holistic chiropractor.

In order to see the benefits of holistic chiropractic care, many may require the implementation of these major components.

Numerous holistic chiropractors attempt to care for the entire wellbeing of an individual, from general health to disease prevention. They observe  each patient, for the reason of their visit as well as their level of wellbeing. After diagnosis, a chiropractor determines a treatment plan that suits that individual.

Keith Overland, president of the American Chiropractic Association, said, “This may include combinations of chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy and rehabilitative procedures for many musculoskeletal problems.”

A few chiropractors provide nutrition advice, exercise plans, lifestyle counseling and so on. In order to see the benefits of holistic chiropractic care, many may require the implementation of these major components. A holistic approach can reduce the requirement for a potentially addictive pain medication or an unnecessary surgery.

Learn how Chiropractic Care can help reduce back and joint pain in expectant women, in addition to promoting a faster recovery time after pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a joyous time in an expectant mother’s life. Albeit exciting, women experience a lot of changes as the infant develops. The back, neck and joints are the different sections of the body that have a tendency to endure the most pain during pregnancy. Alongside an OBGYN, a chiropractor is a beneficial addition to a woman’s pre-natal care team. Chiropractors can help oversee and address back and joint pain issues, with the goal that they don’t turn into an issue during the delivery, or, effect a woman’s recovery time post-pregnancy. Here are 5 key ways chiropractors can be of assistance.

1. Chiropractors can Align the Spine

A woman in a sweater rests her hands on the top of her stomach. A sun flare is seen from the around the corner of the woman.

Chiropractic care amid pregnancy helps to keep the spine aligned and every supporting ligament working properly.

Pregnancy adds a significant amount of extra weight to a woman’s body in a short span of time. This change weighs on the spine, much of the time causing misalignment. When this occurs, the pain can be overwhelming. Chiropractic care amid pregnancy helps to keep the spine aligned and every supporting ligament working properly. This helps to better prepare the spine to help support the additional weight of an infant.

2. Chiropractors relieve pain naturally

Two chiropractic tools are displayed that work heal damaged or stressed zones of an exoectant mother's body.

Chiropractic adjustments reduce the issues that cause pain during pregnancy, allowing the patient to depend less on drugs.

Under most circumstances, women experiencing moderate pain pop two or three over the counter pain relievers and barely bat an eyelash at the idea of it. However, pregnant women try to stay away from pharmaceutical medications when possible. Chiropractic adjustments reduce the issues that cause pain, allowing the patient to depend less on drugs. Experiencing less pain, while also reducing the need for over-the-counter medication is a win-win for the pregnancy.

3. Chiropractic Care strengthens Joints

A woman makes a heart symbol with her hands on her stomach, while her significant other rests his hands on hers.

Chiropractors work to heal already damaged or stressed zones in a woman’s body as a result of her pregnancy.

Pregnancy really affects an expectant mother’s joints. Chiropractic care for pregnant women is a positive approach to limiting the impact that a large abdomen has on one’s hips, legs, and ankles. Regarding the entirety of the body, chiropractic care attempts to reinforce the body. In addition, treatments also work to heal already damaged or stressed zones.

4. Chiropractic Care helps achieve Pelvic Alignment

A woman stands on one leg in a yoga position.

An aligned pelvis is essential to the birthing process, and helps to increase the odds of a successful pregnancy

Helping the birthing process go smoothly,  an aligned pelvis is essential to the birthing process, and helps to increase the odds of a successful natural birth. As per the American Pregnancy Association, “When the pelvis is misaligned it may reduce the amount of room available for the developing baby. This restriction is called intrauterine constraint. A misaligned pelvis may also make it difficult for the baby to get into the best possible position for delivery. This can affect the mother’s ability to have a natural, non-invasive birth.” An experienced chiropractor can adequately adjust the pelvis before birth. This will allow the mother’s pregnancy end without incident.

5. Chiropractic Care promotes Recovery

A woman holds her newborn in the air as the sun sets near the beach.

Women participating in Chiropractic care during a pregnancy can expect a quicker recovery time after the infant is born.

The healthier and stronger a woman’s body is both before and during pregnancy, the easier it is to get back into shape once the child is born. Eating right and effectively exercising are beneficial approaches to accomplishing this. Chiropractic care is an essential component to wellness. Expectant women who benefit from chiropractic care appreciate better posture, less pain, and increased mobility, particularly late into the third trimester.

This enables women to continue with exercise, as well as being active, longer than those with back and joint pain. After the birth, it becomes less of a struggle to get into a workout routine, if the new mother’s joints, back, and hips are adjusted and working appropriately. Chiropractic care can serve to diminish pain and promote the general heath of expectant and new mothers, giving her a chance to unwind and concentrate on the more enjoyable parts of pregnancy. Women who participate in chiropractic care can anticipate a strengthened body, the possibility of a smoother pregnancy, and a quicker recovery time after the infant is born.

Discover how Essential Hypertension could be Prevented with Proper Breathing Exercises.

Essential Hypertension – the most common type of hypertension – accounts for 95 percent of people with high blood pressure. Fortunately, researchers at the University of Melbourne and Macquarie University have noted unusual activity between neurons controlling breathing and blood pressure during the developing stages of essential hypertension. These researchers believe that if caught early enough, essential hypertension might one day be prevented with proper breathing exercises.

What is Essential Hypertension?

A blood pressure cuff representing Essential Hypertension's effect on blood pressure.

High Blood pressure effects 30% of the population, and is a primary contributor to heart disease.

Essential Hypertension is high blood pressure that occurs without a known secondary cause. Additionally, effects 30% of the global population, and is a primary contributor to cardiovascular disease. Unfortunately there is no known cure for essential hypertension. However, the results discovered by Researcher Professor Andrew Allen may help prevent high blood pressure from developing in middle-aged adults.

How Breathing could Prevent High Blood Pressure

A woman practices yoga with a city in the backdrop, representing the practice of slowing your heart rate.

Regulating your breathing slows your heart rate and could prevent higher blood pressure.

Andrew Allen notes that research parallels what athletes and eastern philosophies have long understood between breathing and heart rate. Allen states that, “Biathletes have to regulate their breathing to slow down their heart rate before rifle shooting. Additionally, eastern meditative practices such as yoga and pranayama have always emphasized the interaction between the two.” These neurons represent a potential target for therapies to prevent hypertension from growing in the middle of an individual’s life. Professor Allen and his co-author, Clement Menuet agree that intervention should be done early, as the nervous system is plastic.

When Should Breathing Exercises Begin?

A woman taking a depth breath used to represent breathing exercises.

Breathing exercises should be practiced during an individual’s youth.

Research published by Cell Metabolism discovered altered activity between circuits of neurons that regulate breathing rates and the blood pressure becomes fixed. Additionally, any reductions in blood pressure from breathing adjustments appear to be temporary in adulthood. In the case of those tested during adolescence, “By interrupting the activity between these two groups of neurons during adolescence, we were able to dramatically reduce development of high blood pressure in adulthood,” says Allen. Altered neural activity leads to increased fluctuations in blood pressure with every breath. They are seen in young, healthy adults at risk of developing high blood pressure mid-life. This puts emphasis on the need to identify and treat those at risk of developing high blood pressure early. “By understanding what predictors of hypertension are easy to assess, we might be better placed to offer early treatment to pre-hypertensive patients,” concludes Professor Allen.
