Learn more about slouching and the negative impact that it could have on your teenager in the future, and what can be done to prevent it

Do you remember hearing that infamous phrase “Sit up straight!” when you were younger? Do you remember wondering why it was so important that you sat up straight, and how much you hated being told to do so? How many times have you said this to your own particular child or teenager on any given day? There’s reason for that famous saying, and it may be more important than you think. If you develop a habit of poor posture as a child or teenager, you may be setting yourself up for multiple back issues and pain later on. As a result, researchers conducted a study in order to better understand slouching in young children and teenagers.

The Focus Group

A woman with her back turned towards the camera sits on the floor.

researchers found that a male teenager was more likely to slouch than a woman.

A study published in the US National Library of Medicine asked 1,596 teenagers to fill out questionnaires about their way of life, psychosocial profiles, and experience with back pain. In addition to these factors, researchers also asked that they report their Sagittal sitting posture, body mass index (BMI), and back muscle endurance (BME). These researchers found that young men were more likely to slouch than young woman were.

Results and Conclusions

A teenager sits on the floor, against a wall, hunched over his laptop.

“Teenagers who slouch have a higher tendency to have a weaker lower back…”

Sitting in front of the TV, having a higher BMI, and a lower self-esteem only increased the chances of teenagers developing a form of slouching. In addition, teenagers who slouch have a higher tendency to have a weaker lower back, as well as an irregular standing position and increased back pain. Researchers also indicated that teens who suffer from back pain while seated scored lower on a child-behavioral test. It should be mentioned that the degree of slouching and BME were less related to back pain than those factors mentioned previously.

This evidence suggests that there is more to the saying, “Sit up straight,” than people might realize. It spans way beyond a proper posture, but rather, prevents unnecessary back pain in the future. Encouraging a healthier way of life and inspiring confidence in your child or teen could assume a major part in correcting their posture. If you are concerned that your child or teen may be suffering from poor posture, consider visiting a Chiropractor to assess their sitting and standing posture.

Discover how Holistic Chiropractic Care works to improve your overall health through back, neck and joint pain treatments.

Back and neck pain are the main areas for which patients look for chiropractic help. Through manual spinal manipulation, chiropractic care serves as a holistic therapy that concentrates on fortifying up solid musculoskeletal and nervous systems to promote general wellness. To learn more about how chiropractors effectively relieve symptoms as they relate to back, neck, and joint pain, we will dive deeper into what it takes to make Holistic Chiropractic Care work.

Effectiveness of these Treatments

Research on Holistic Chiropractic Care demonstrates that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, alongside exercise, alleviate neck pain more successfully than prescription drugs.

New research on holistic chiropractic care is surging. As per the Annals of Internal Medicine, recent tests demonstrate that spinal manipulative therapy performed by a chiropractor, alongside exercise, alleviate neck pain more successfully than prescription drugs. Additionally, the Journal of Manipulative and Physiological Therapeutics detailed that an incorporated approach to health care – including holistic chiropractic care – brings about a 51.8 percent reductions in pharmaceutical expenses and 43 percent less hospital admissions. Consider seeing a chiropractor, should you encounter persistent pain in your back, neck or joints, in addition to migraines. This is particularly so if frequent soreness follows accidents, chores or prolonged periods of poor posture.

Treating Back, Neck and Joint Pain

The joints in a foot are massaged by a holistic chiropractor to allow nerves to work at their optimum ability.

“Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability, allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability.”

Chiropractors are best known for securely and effectively treating intense back and neck pain, as well as persistent headaches. While a medical doctor may recommend pain medicine, muscle relaxers or anti-inflammatory drugs, and an orthopedic specialist may propose surgery, a chiropractor will treat your chiropractic issues by hand, through control of the spine.

Nancy Elwartowski-Cooper, a pediatric and prenatal chiropractor, sees more and more referrals from medical doctors: “They (patients) are tired of the drugs and want answers to what is causing their problems.”

Chiropractors bring the musculoskeletal structure to the correct alignment. Chiropractors change the position of your body and apply pressure to specific positions along the spine that are not adequately adjusted. This creates a popping sound, similar to the one made when you crack your knuckles. The noise is made by an adjustment of pressure in your joints as gas bubbles are released. By altering the spine with their hands at specific pressure points, chiropractors release nerve energy and enable it to drift down your spine and all throughout your entire body. Frequent visits can, after some time, realign your spine to better promote general wellbeing.

Chiropractor Brian Elwartowski said the mind sends messages down the spinal cord and out through the nerves to your entire body. In the event that specific nerves are squeezed by a twist in the spine, they won’t function as though they were straight. “Chiropractic [care] allows the nerves to work at their most optimum ability,” he states, “allowing the body to heal at its optimum ability.”

Choosing a Treatment Plan that is right for you

In order to see the benefits of holistic chiropractic care, many may require the implementation of these major components.

Numerous holistic chiropractors attempt to care for the entire wellbeing of an individual, from general health to disease prevention. They observe  each patient, for the reason of their visit as well as their level of wellbeing. After diagnosis, a chiropractor determines a treatment plan that suits that individual.

Keith Overland, president of the American Chiropractic Association, said, “This may include combinations of chiropractic manipulation, physical therapy and rehabilitative procedures for many musculoskeletal problems.”

A few chiropractors provide nutrition advice, exercise plans, lifestyle counseling and so on. In order to see the benefits of holistic chiropractic care, many may require the implementation of these major components. A holistic approach can reduce the requirement for a potentially addictive pain medication or an unnecessary surgery.

One woman lived with migraines and back pain all her life, until one friend recommended she try an Elimination Diet.

Even the most common food items may end up being the cause of your unexplained medical issues. Such was the situation for Kim Taylor, a mother of two from Austin, Texas. She experienced unbearable migraines over the course of many years, not including knee and back agony that continued to persist.

Diagnosing the Problem

An elimination diet begins with the of dispensing elimination of certain foods and food groups.

When nothing else seemed to relieve Kim’s pain, she found through a close friend, a program called Personalize to Thrive. This program presented the concept of an elimination diet. This relatively new idea begins with the elimination of certain foods and food groups to discover which ones may affect your wellbeing. Basic foods to begin with are dairy products, eggs, nuts, nightshade vegetables, gluten, soy, and corn. Additionally, you may tailor the elimination diet anyway you like, given what you think may be causing your illness.

This is the method Kim began, and her outcomes were incredible. By day 8 of the diet, Kim says,  “I jumped out of bed around 5:45 a.m. and had more energy than I could remember having even in my twenties. I slept soundly all night and nothing in my body hurt.” Perhaps the greatest shock was discovering which food items were really causing her chronic pain and migraines. Kim admits that her sugar cravings toward the start of the elimination diet demonstrated an astonishing and obscure dependence on sugar, yet that wasn’t the main contributor to all of her pain.

Eliminating Foods and Pain

“It didn’t matter whether the chicken was boneless, skinless, organic chicken or not, but every time I ate chicken I got a migraine…”

Surprisingly, chicken and corn were the main cause of Kim Taylor’s migraines. “It didn’t matter whether the chicken was boneless, skinless, organic chicken or not, but every time I ate chicken I got a migraine,” Kim says.”When I introduced a single corn tortilla, the very next day I gained over three pounds! I’ve tried corn in every manner since, and it now makes me physically ill if I accidentally ingest corn.”

Her discoveries are confirmation that every body is unique, and even apparently harmless foods can unexpectedly cause dietary issues. Elimination diets are a way to explore different avenues regarding your dietary intake, in addition to gaining useful knowledge about how your individual body reacts to the foods you intake. “Too many doctors are quick to prescribe medication to mask the pain,” Kim says. “The pain is there to tell us something is wrong with our bodies.”
